What Makes a Performance Sensory‑Friendly
Gentle Lighting Throughout the Show
During sensory‑friendly performances, the audience lights remain softly illuminated for the entire show. This helps guests feel grounded in their surroundings and supports those who may become uncomfortable in full darkness. It also ensures clear visibility for our American Sign Language interpreters.
Reduced Special Effects
To create a calmer environment, certain effects are modified or removed:
No flashing or strobe lights
Loud or sudden sound cues are softened or eliminated
No smoke or fog effects, supporting guests with breathing sensitivities
These adjustments help reduce sensory overload while preserving the heart of the performance.
Flexible Audience Expectations
Sensory‑friendly shows allow audience members to engage with the performance in ways that feel natural and comfortable for them.
Guests may leave their seats if they become overwhelmed
The lobby remains open as a quieter space where the show can still be heard at a lower volume
Vocalizations, movement, and quiet conversation are welcome
Audience silence is not required, as long as everyone remains safe
