Experience The Addams Family in a sensory-friendly performance designed for accessibility and comfort, without losing a bit of the fun.
The sensory-friendly performance is different from a typical show in ways that make it easier for more people in our community to attend.
First, the audience lights are kept slightly dim but remain on for the whole performance. This helps audience members see their surroundings and also allows us to have three American Sign Language interpreters performing with the cast. Interpreters from The HeArd (heardwhatsup.com) a Cleveland non-profit that brings ASL to public performing arts in Northeast Ohio will be joining us for the third year!
Second, we reduce the special effects. There will be no flashing lights, loud sounds will be quieter or removed, and no smoke will be used so guests with breathing concerns can stay comfortable.
Thirdly, some of the typical rules of audience expectations will be loosened. Audience members are free to leave their seats during the production if things are upsetting or overwhelming. The performing arts center doors will remain open and the lobby will be available for audience members who wish to still be able to hear the show at a lower volume and without a crowd. The expectation that the audience will remain silent is relaxed. Audience members are welcome to respond to the performance in ways that feel natural for them, whether that’s talking quietly, making sounds, or moving around, so long as it’s safe for everyone.
All of these changes are meant to create a space where each person can engage with the show in the way that works best for their comfort and needs.
